Projects In Discovery

Projects at this stage are concepts being vetted and researched 1.) to make an initial assessment of viability and 2.) to develop a proposal for project objectives and scope that can be reviewed and prioritized by the Durham Next Board of Directors. Not all projects require a discovery phase. Durham Next is either leading or supporting the exploratory phases of these projects due to their alignment with its mission; however, other community partners may be identified to lead or join the project team based on the direction in which each project progresses.

Festival Ecosystem

There is a great desire to support and cultivate festivals and events in the community.

Freeway Cap

The DMP proposes the building of a freeway cap or greenway over Highway 147.

Active Projects

These are in-progress projects whose next phase of work has been approved by the Durham Next Board, and Durham Next resources are being applied to move it forward. A project team has – or will be – formed, with a plan for project progress and community engagement. It’s important to note, however, that being an active project doesn’t mean a decision has been made to complete the project or that public funds have been committed to build or create it. Many of the projects in the DMP are of such size and scale that months or years of research, planning and design may be required to determine the project’s full benefits and cost, determine where it could be located, create a plan for how it can be financed, and ultimately, provide a full recommendation for the project’s completion. Durham Next may be leading these projects or playing a prominent role in their development.

Partner Initiatives

Below are ongoing projects or initiatives happening across Durham County led by other community partners. While we may not be leading these projects, we’re thrilled they’re happening. These projects create investments in the Durham community that align with our mission, so you may spot us rooting from the sidelines or even jumping in to help out along the way.

Durham Rail Trail

In August 2018, Durham City Council adopted a master plan for a trail in the Rail Trail corridor.

Durham County Gateway Signage

City of Durham’s General Services Department conducted a study of potential locations and costs for new gateway signage.
