Project Background
Across the decades, the Durham Athletic Park became the stage for countless history-making moments: the rise of the Durham Bulls, the legacy of the Durham Black Sox and other Negro League teams, and, of course, its iconic role in the beloved 1988 film “Bull Durham,” which introduced the ballpark’s charm to a national audience.
Although it remains available for games, showcase events and other activations, the ballpark sits dormant for much of the year — roughly 241 days — due to the high cost of maintenance and limited operational use.
Following a year-long feasibility study commissioned by the City of Durham to explore future possibilities for the site, the Durham City Council voted to pursue a path focused on preserving and restoring the DAP for flexible, multipurpose use.
Durham Next and the Durham Sports Commission have offered to partner with the City to move the project forward, with a vision of transforming the DAP into a revitalized community asset — one that honors local history, expands recreational opportunities, fosters connection and vibrancy and stimulates economic activity for surrounding businesses.
