A Visionary Community Partnership for the Sustainable Advancement of Durham as the Best Place to Live, Work and Visit

A Letter From Our

Founding Executive Director

Less than a year and a half ago, Durham Next didn’t exist.

At that time, this team had the findings of Durham’s Destination Master Plan, a concept of a framework and Durham’s community-wide vision in hand and needed a pathway to move it forward. In a short time, this nascent organization has emerged to become a prominent conversation-starter, partner, convenor and accelerator for transformational investment in Durham.

The opportunity to join such a dynamic and forward-thinking organization has been truly inspiring, and I am eager to help make Durham not just the best place to live, work and visit — but a place that thrives because of its community. As the newest member of the team, I’ve been impressed with the energy, resilience and passion displayed by this organization, our partners and the community members that have engaged with us so authentically. It is with great honor and deep enthusiasm that I take on the task of building upon the momentum that Discover Durham began.

As Durham Next continues to collaborate across the county, it’s important for me to say that, above all, my role in this organization is one of service — service to this incredible community, to the individuals who call Durham home and to the partners who share our vision of creating lasting, positive change. I believe deeply in the power of collaboration, in the ability of every voice to contribute to a greater whole, and in the transformative potential of building on what makes Durham so special: its history, its people and its spirit of innovation.

I want to recognize our elected leaders and staff at the City of Durham and Durham County Government, as well as our leaders in the community’s private sector, who have not hesitated to be a part of the effort. Durham Next’s extraordinary timeline of success and operational development would not have been possible without your support. We thank you for approaching this work with an open mind, embracing innovation and ensuring Durham’s values remain at the forefront of what we do.

As I step into this role, I am committed to listening, learning and working tirelessly to ensure that every initiative we pursue is done with the collective good in mind. Together, we will accelerate the development of community assets — spaces, projects and experiences — that are rooted in Durham’s values and aspirations. From welcoming public spaces to dynamic cultural experiences and everything in between, we will create a future that honors both our rich past and our bright future.

I know that our best days are ahead of us, and I am excited to be part of this journey with all of you. As we embark on this mission, I invite you to share your ideas, your passion and your vision for Durham’s future.

Together, we will not only create a destination for visitors, but a place where our community feels truly at home.

A Letter From Our

Inaugural Board Chair

What an honor it’s been to be a part of this bold and innovative effort to serve the Durham Community and to work toward securing a future that, in turn, serves the folks that live, work and create here.

Often imitated, but never duplicated, Durham is one of one. The community’s unmatched creativity, inclusive nature, rich history, vibrant culture and resolute pride set it apart from the rest. Durham is an incredible place that’s quickly growing into its potential, and everyone sees it. The buzz about Durham is growing, and that means so are we.

Durham’s greatness is a result of the outstanding contributions of those who call this place home, and we must prioritize planning for the future if we want to ensure Durham can continue to cultivate its character. We’re now taking advantage of the asset that many other communities across our state and nation use to support those dreams: leveraging visitor spending in Durham to reinvest in our dreams for our future. Durham Next has created a pathway to get us there.

The community collectively crafted a vision for who we wanted to be in 20 years, and it’s been nothing short of inspiring to see Durham’s leaders, educators, advocates, culture-drivers, workforce, students and more coming together to start planting these seeds of transformation. We have the chance to make Durham a place where residents, business owners and visitors feel welcomed, valued and empowered. This isn’t just about attracting visitor dollars; it’s about creating a Durham where everyone can thrive. It’s about investing in our communities, amplifying local businesses and creating experiences that not only support tourism, but make living and working here a joy.

Within the last nine months, this organization has made unprecedented strides to create alignment in the community and kick-start collective momentum around major local projects that make the community more colorful and connected. Durham Next is a true champion of Durham, pushing forward the projects that will provide social and economic benefits that the community shouldn’t have to wait years to experience.

As I work alongside this Board, our partners and you — our community — I’m confident that we can make Durham the destination to beat: a place where the best of business, culture and community come together. A place where every voice matters and where the dream of a brighter future is no longer just a vision, but a reality.

Let’s continue to DREAM BIG, and together, usher in Durham’s next era.

Who Owns the Vision for Durham?

We asked ourselves that question as we worked with the community to develop a 20-year vision rooted in Durham’s values: a vision to guide us toward a future in which those who live and work here can prosper. Through months of engagement by way of town halls, surveys, focus groups, listening sessions and interviews, one message rang clear: Durham doesn’t want to be like anywhere else, only the best of what it already is.

That shared sentiment shaped a community-led vision focused on honoring Durham’s rich history, celebrating what makes it unique and aligning efforts toward common goals. This vision became the foundation of the Destination Master Plan (DMP), a roadmap for developing Durham as a destination with 60+ recommendations for projects that drive both economic and social benefit. The DMP aims to enhance Durham not only as a thriving visitor destination but also as an exceptional place to live and work, receiving unanimous endorsements by the DMP Steering Committee, comprised of 22 leaders representing the public and private sectors, as well as the county’s Tourism Development Authority.

By 2044, Durham will be the most welcoming, inclusive, innovative and vibrant destination in the United States, while thoughtfully honoring its history and people.

Visitor spending plays a key role in that vision. For three straight years, visitors to Durham have spent over $1 billion annually, supporting local hospitality businesses, creating jobs and generating tax revenue that funds public services. To put that in perspective: 2,740 people would have to spend $1,000 a day for 365 days to reach the same level of spending within a year.

Yet most of Durham’s top attractions, the ones that draw visitors, were created before 2008. The average age of these attractions is 53 years. Without new investments in public spaces, venues and experiences, Durham risks falling behind its growing population and losing the momentum and benefits tourism brings, benefits that are helping other communities thrive.

Turning vision into reality takes work, but there was no handbook for what that looked like in Durham, leading us to create the framework for Durham Next.

Durham Next is a visionary, community partnership for the sustainable advancement of Durham as the best place to live, work and visit. This organization is designed to create:

  • Community Alignment – Bringing together public and private stakeholders to ensure development happens collaboratively, not in silos, and to create shared spaces like parks, trails and venues that benefit everyone.
  • Efficient Development Processes – Streamlining complex steps like feasibility research, community engagement, fundraising and advocacy, Durham Next acts as a one-stop shop to keep projects moving forward.
  • Long-Term Investment Focus – While the City of Durham and Durham County Government work to address the community’s immediate needs, Durham Next ensures ongoing attention to visionary planning and investment that continues beyond election cycles.

Since its inception, Durham Next has established its inaugural Board, welcomed its founding executive director and launched a new, innovative approach to community engagement to keep community members at the table of this work. Along the way, we’ve engaged with leaders and culture-drivers across Durham County to build momentum around pursuing this 20-year vision.

From planting the first seeds to establishing a strong foundation, Durham Next is taking root. This first annual report highlights the thoughtful work of the past two and a half years and sets the stage for Durham’s future, established collectively, with the values of this community at the heart of it.

Priority Projects

The DMP’s 60+ initiatives include a wide range of investment opportunities for Durham, from supporting transportation connectivity to building more venue spaces for events to commissioning public art that inspires vibrancy in the community. The DMP focuses both on developing projects that create economic benefit in the community, while also identifying ways to further Durham as a thriving visitor destination and exceptional place to live and work.

In January 2025, the Board met for the first time to determine which projects were identified as priorities to push forward this fiscal year. Based on factors like their ability to make positive economic and cultural impact in Durham, their cost and difficulty to complete and the intention to balance long-range and short-term progress, these are the priority projects that rose to the top.

Festival Ecosystem

Research ways to support and cultivate festivals and events that attract visitor dollars and create vibrant experiences for visitors and residents alike to enjoy.

RDU International Airport Welcome Signage

Installation of welcome signage in Terminal 2 of Raleigh-Durham International Airport to welcome travelers, many of whom may be unfamiliar with Durham and all it has to offer.

Matching Grants Program

Provide matching grants to efforts within the community that create tangible benefits to residents, boost the visitor economy and push Durham closer to fulfilling its 20-year vision.

Multipurpose Sports Facility

A multipurpose, indoor-outdoor sports facility capable of supporting championship-level sporting events that attract visitors and create recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.

Durham County Memorial Stadium Feasibility Study

A feasibility study to identify opportunities to upgrade, expand or rebuild the existing infrastructure at Durham County Memorial Stadium to improve its capabilities for hosting more championship-level sports and other large-scale events.

Convention & Events Center with Headquarter Hotel

A new convention and events center and adjoining hotel with a focus on innovation, expanded size and multi-use capabilities to attract more overnight visitors and spending, while also serving a community need for more venue space and other modern amenities.

Along with the priority projects we’re pursuing, we’re also supporting a few ongoing projects and initiatives happening across Durham County, including:

  • Community Safety Efforts: The Destination Master Plan calls for the continued advocacy for community safety to ensure positive experiences for both visitors and residents.
  • Durham Rail Trail: Durham Next is supporting the City of Durham’s development of the Durham Rail Trail, a 1.7-mile-long stretch of inactive railroad right-of-way that circles downtown, to bring together community partners to invest in creating amenities and activities along the trail.
  • Durham County Gateway Signage: Durham Next and the City of Durham’s General Services Department are currently exploring funding options to support inspiring Durham-branded signage that would enhance the experience of arriving in Durham and reflect the character of the community within.
Introducing a New Approach to

Community Engagement

When we set out to shape Durham’s 20-year vision, we knew it couldn’t just be a plan created for the community; it had to be built alongside the community. From those early conversations, it became clear that meaningful, long-term input would be essential, not just during planning, but throughout the implementation of each DMP initiative. So, we developed a new model for engagement, one that reflects Durham’s progressive values, adapts to the needs of projects both big and small and keeps community voices at the center of the work every step of the way.

Enter the Durham Next Community Advisory Council, our bold, innovative answer to sustained, equitable community engagement. Guided by Durham Next’s five pillars of engagement, the Council officially launched in July 2025, bringing together 33 diverse voices from across Durham County. These members, representing a wide range of perspectives and lived experiences, serve two-year terms advising project teams, shaping outreach strategies and ensuring the community’s voice is not only heard, but actively involved in shaping outcomes.

This built-in engagement arm creates a powerful and efficient structure for driving transformational change. More than just a sounding board, the Council plays a hands-on role in aligning projects with community values, accelerating benefits to residents and ensuring every initiative supported by Durham Next is rooted in collective impact. It’s not just a new table; it’s a new way of setting the table altogether.
