How It Works
Durham Next project funding comes from a portion of occupancy tax receipts, public and private grants and corporate and individual donations. Durham Next is operated and managed by Discover Durham, the county’s destination marketing organization and Tourism Development Authority. Discover Durham is funded by receiving a portion of the occupancy tax spent by overnight visitors at local lodging establishments, and is authorized to invest up to one third of its tax receipts in tourism-related projects and initiatives, which it does through Durham Next. Durham Next staff and its board of directors recommend projects for funding, which are authorized by the Discover Durham Board of Directors.
Durham Next invites corporate and individual gifts and sponsorships. These funds may be used to create feasibility studies, drive project planning, buy bricks and mortar or provide matching grants to other organizations in the community pursuing projects aligned with Durham Next’s mission.
