We’re launching the Durham Next Community Investment Program to partner within the community and invest in festivals, events and initiatives that strengthen the visitor economy, deliver meaningful benefits for residents and move Durham closer to realizing its 20-year vision.
Primarily funded through occupancy tax revenue generated by overnight hotel stays in Durham, these investments will support projects that attract visitors, create vibrant community experiences and drive economic impact.
This program comprises two separate funds.

Accelerate: A Durham Festival Collective
Accelerate is a multi-year, capacity-building program designed to strengthen Durham’s festival ecosystem by supporting a small group of high-potential, homegrown festivals. The initiative aims to increase economic impact, improve festival quality and sustainability and advance Durham’s identity as a vibrant, inclusive and entrepreneurial destination.
In this pilot year, three to five festivals will be selected for grants of up to $100,000 per year over three years. Selected festival producers will receive wraparound services such as business coaching and growth planning support, marketing and audience development strategies and support in navigating City and County processes.
Those selected for the opportunity will be part of a collective that meets regularly over the three-year grant period for learning, idea sharing and mutual support. Festivals that are part of Accelerate will not be eligible for Festivals & Special Events Funding from the City during the granting period.

The Durham Next Impact Fund
The Durham Next Impact Fund (IF) invests in activations and events that deliver tangible benefits to residents while attracting visitors from outside the county. Through this program, Durham Next aims to catalyze bold ideas and innovative experiences that contribute to a stronger, more dynamic Durham for residents and visitors alike.
This program provides matching grants to eligible Durham-based nonprofits, locally owned businesses and government entities for projects aligned with Durham Next’s mission and strategic goals. Eligible projects must be based in Durham County and demonstrate clear potential to advance economic impact by expanding visitor engagement, local tourism or destination appeal.
Grants typically range from $10,000 to $25,000. Applicants must secure a cash match for the requested grant amount and submit a clear plan for project delivery, marketing, impact measurement and sustainability. Government entities must provide a 1:1 match. Small businesses and nonprofits must provide a 50% match. Regularly recurring events are not eligible, unless applicants can demonstrate that grant funds provide for a compelling expansion of a visitor attraction.
