Project Background

Durham County Memorial Stadium is an 8,500-seat sports and event venue owned by Durham County. The stadium was originally built in 1958 and underwent significant renovations in 2010 and again in 2019 to expand the stadium’s facilities and hosting capabilities. Today, Durham County Memorial Stadium is home to some Shaw University athletic teams: Football, Men’s Soccer and Women’s Soccer, the Carolina Flyers Ultimate frisbee professional team, collegiate conference championships, state and regional championship games and various community programs and events, but is not used to full capacity or optimized to support sports tourism and the community benefits that could provide.

With approval from the County and the Stadium Authority Board, the Durham Sports Commission and Durham Next will conduct a feasibility study to identify opportunities to upgrade, expand or rebuild the existing infrastructure at Durham County Memorial Stadium to improve its capabilities for hosting more championship-level sports, as well as other festivals and large-scale events.

Next Steps

An RFP has been issued to identify consultants to lead the feasibility assessment. Simultaneously, the team will begin outlining a community engagement plan to ensure that local perspectives are taken into consideration as this project moves forward.
